SIGLAP NUSANTARA ORCHESTRA

SIGLAP NUSANTARA ORCHESTRA

The Siglap Secondary School Nusantara Orchestra was established in 1998, incorporating the Angklung and Kulintang ensembles. In the year 2000, it was expended to include the Gamelan Ensemble.

The SNO is unique to the region and the world as it is the only orchestra that uses traditional Indonesian gamelan instruments but tuned to the international diatonic music scale of western instruments. This has also allowed the fusion of western instruments and percussions in the orchestra, making it a truly Singaporean Orchestra with an international perspective.

The SNO has created its own unique concept, design of instruments and new style of playing. For example, the SNO has invented the frame-mounted bass Angklung sets comprising of 3 tone and 4 tone bass Angklings and the diagonal framed Angklungs. With these new inventions the SNO is able to use a large number of Angklungs with fewer players, thus producing thicker and richer sound quality.

The orchestra has performed in numerous prestigious events and has attained several Singapore Youth Festival awards. To date, it still holds the title of being the only Secondary School to attain Gold with Honour awards for both its Gamelan Ensemble and the Angklung Kulintang Ensemble, making it the Best Ensembles in Singapore.

Our Achievements:

SYF - Angklung Kulintang Ensemble: 2001 Gold; 2003 Silver; 2005 Silver; 2007 Gold with Honours; 2009 Gold with Honours.

SYF - Gamelan Ensemble: 2003 Gold; 2005 Gold with Honours; 2007 Silver; 2009 Gold with Honours
The SNO is conceptualised and conducted by Music Director Mr Mohamed Khamis Selamat.
Teachers-In-Charge : Mdm Noraishah Mostapa & Mr Lek G C
